They're not just on 35W. Apparently shoulders are no longer a safe haven for stranded motorists.
Even though shoulders were never intended to be used for routine travel (in many areas they are not as wide as a lane, and are not paved as thick as a lane) they are now bus lanes. If your can breaks down, and you have to use the shoulder for its intended use, your car will be wisked away if it impedes the flow of bus traffic in these zones. You might even notice on 35W that they moved the stripes to make the shoulders wider so the busses actually fit on the shoulder, making the right lane a tad bit narrower. I'm a big believer of bus lanes, but not of shoulder use. Shoulders should be the safe zone for stranded motorists. Having busses on shoulders, I think, causes hazards for cars entering and exiting the freeways. In areas where the shoulder isn't wide enough, having busses edge out cars is dangerous. And, if a car is stalled on the shoulder, having busses weave in and out can't be safe (I guess that's why they made tow-away zones) Also, look at the damage being caused by busses on shoulders. What are the future costs going to be to for repair?
