Hello List, Hey, no one has griped about airport stuff for a while (or griped about griping about airport noise!), so here a few things to think about (and possibly discuss) concerning our big next-door neighbor.
1. New construction in the noise zone? How would you like to live at the very end of the runway? The Strib profiled a new neighbor on 28th Av. who is building a modest home on an empty lot there. One of his reasons he cited (northsiders will love this!) is that noise is preferable to crime... Actually, former city council member Dore Mead once told me this is one of the cohesive and most community spirited neighborhoods in the city. You can read more about it here: http://www.startribune.com/stories/462/4198415.html 2. Where do those noise contours fall, anyway? The MAC is working on its new noise contour maps, and on Monday approved a set of numbers and assumptions to be submitted to a federal noise-modeling program. Our sister organization, SMAAC, has been diligently researching this issue. They contend that the noise exposure map update for 2002 to 2007 is tardy, based on unfair and unlikely assumptions and projections, does not account for unrealized noise abatement from 1996 to 2006, favors private corporations and is not in the public interest. The Star Tribune covers the story at: http://www.startribune.com/stories/462/4218414.html 3. SMAAC Fall Forum 2003 Want to learn more about noise abatement and operations issues at MSP? Our sister organization, SMAAC (South Metro Airport Action Council), is holding their annual Fall Forum on: Thursday, November 20, 2003 7.00 pm Windom Community Center 5821 Wentworth Avenue South AIRPORT NOISE THEN AND NOW AND THEN is the theme of this years fall forum. SMAACs fall meeting is an opportunity for the public to review airport issue history (then), to discuss current concerns with MAC Executive Director Jeff Hamiel (now) and to forecast future issues (then).
