Margaret Hastings Reports: In fairness to Erik, he did post to me, but only to say that it is MNDOT that is putting in the bridge rods. (I already knew that).... have my interview with MNDOT on film. Since that was not the point of my post to him.. I responded that he had not answered my question. which was--- will he or the mayor talk about their feelings about the bridge rods being put up? I prefer to call them "Dog in the Manger Rods?-- you know, that dog coudn't and did not want to eat hay, but he would not let those cows or sheep eat it. What is the loss of political capital (sp?) to voice a normal reaction of outrage about those bridge rods?
Peter Schmitz Responds: Margaret should go to Sam and Sylvia Kaplan's home on New Year's Eve. Perhaps if she gives them her hundred dollars the Mayor will tell her how he really feels about the bridge rods. He sure got riled up when his fair weather buddies from the Police Federation insulted his best buddy, Barrett Lane (who will also be at the Kaplan's on New Year's Eve), but evidently, the bridge rods don't bother R.T. one bit. As for Brandon Lacy's post regarding airport noise and how effective R.T. has been as a Mayor: I've noticed a decrease in airport noise in my neighborhood, but that's more attributable to the 9-1-1 attacks and the recession, which contrary to what the Bush administration says, is very much with us, otherwise we wouldn't have the mid-year cuts in public school budgets. And thank you for your good posts, Brandon, especially in regard to homeless youth. To answer Steve Brandt's question about Don Samuels and speculation that he'd be running against R.T. in '05: I recall reading about it in the City Pages last summer, but I was skeptical. Samuels has always struck me as being very entrenched in the New Guard, even before he won his council seat in a special election. Remember that photograph of him, his wife and R.T. Rybak? It was taken for the Strib, just after the riots in Jordan (which occurred the summer before Joe Biernat, Don Samuels's predecessor, was forced to resign). --------------------------------Peter Schmitz, thanking God I've never been homeless (so far) CARAG REMINDERS: 1.
