I admit I get rather upset with my mayor, and I think he could do better. But I must admit, he has done some good things.
Accounting for affordable housing. I think we all need more accurate numbers rather than just a blanket number that covers the whole gamut of housing in that category. How about the 80%MMI numbers, the 50%MMI numbers, the 30%MMI numbers, even the shelter beds. Lets be given all of the numbers. How much have we paid for each of these? Was my townhouse a better buy than some of the affordable housing? I think MCDA had bamboozled us long enough with their lofty talk and handouts to developers. I read through the MCDA report for last year, its quite extensive. Not an easy read, and I am sure I missed plenty. they managed to spend a lot of my money on "market rate" housing while spending some on "affordable housing". I truly wonder how it can be called "market rate" when tax dollars were used to get it built? I also wonder why so much of the "affordable housing" is rental while the "market rate" is owner occupied. I am not for handouts for handouts sake. Make my dollar go as far is can possibly go, and if that means giving a house to a poor family for far less than it cost, great. Why should I pay developer X money to build an apartment building for that family, and then pay developer X to keep it affordable. sounds like a money pit to me. If I am wrong about this help me and the others here understand why. In case anyone had gotten this far I have a question about the wonderful thing we like to call "unfunded mandates". I am not very aware so I will ask this question. Why the hell does Minneapolis (or any other city for that matter) do what the county, state, or feds tell them they have to unless the money comes from the SOB that mandated it? I have the same question regarding County and State government. If the feds want it they should pay for it, if the state wants it Tim should pay for it, if the County wants it then they should pay for it. I realize this would happen with my dollars regardless of what level it happened in, but it would be a fairer system if the rule makers had to figure out how to pay for implimentation of the rules they pass. I love this forum for all the education I have received because of the diversity of emotion and knowledge here. As for Jim Graham, I do look forward to his return some day. As for Vickie, it took my a while to understand why she gave a rats ass about Mpls since he lives in here fortress community, but her posts were potent and enjoyable.
