Says who? I am pro-choice and in support of equal
freedoms (such as contract) for glbt individuals. If
that doesn't make me "moderate" I don't know what
would.

Deputy Chair, Minneapolis Republican Committee

I know some moderates who don't go to Republican Precinct Caucuses because they don't feel welcome. I encourage them to go. The party belongs to those who show up.

I have gotten email from time to time (in my position with Log Cabin Republicans) from gay people who have gone to Republican caucuses - and leave feeling utterly devastated because of the anti-gay vitriol they hear from fellow caucus attendees. That I think is problematic for the Republican Party - because these people tell their friends about their experience. At the same time, the only way this type of thing will change is when a critical mass of openly gay people start to go to Republican caucuses - and stand up to this nonsense. Now I've gotten a little of this type of nonsense from some isolated Republican activists - quoting Leviticus or whatever - but I usually have some fun with it - pointing out that Leviticus 18:20 refers to men, and says nothing whatsoever about Lesbians. But then for some wierd reason, I find much of the anti-gay vitriol spewed by the Leviticus Crowd to be absurd - and also humorous in it's absurdity. Go check out Fred Phelps (a Democrat by the way) website: http://www.godhatesfags.com).

I can say that the Minneapolis Republican City Committee - Carleton Crawford, Connie Nompelis, Lee Eklund, Shirley Carlson, Larissa Presho and others have been very interested in partnering with Log Cabin Republicans to reach out to the Gay and Lesbian Community. Carleton and I went down to the legislature to testify against the Lindner bill (it ended up that opponents of the bill weren't allowed to testify except for OutFront Minnesota).

At the same time, when I and others from the Republican City Committee and LCR have staffed a booth at Gay Pride - or at the Rainbow Families Conference - it's inevitable to get a few people coming up with the "how can you be a republican - that's like being a jew for Hitler" type nonsense.

I've been an elected alternate to the Republican State Convention - and once after I had introduced a resolution - which passed - to repeal the sodomy law.

Also - moderates often don't feel welcome at Democratic caucuses either. I've heard similar criticism of the DFL.
