According to today's Star Tribune, Mayor Rybak's choice for police
chief, William McManus, has across-the-board support among leaders from
minority communities in Minneapolis. Needless to say, the Police
Federation is not as enthusiastic.
Natalie Johnson Lee and Don Samuels (our only two council members of
color), along with Paul Zerby, Paul Ostrow and Dean Zimmerman, have
already expressed that they'll approve Rybak's choice.
Will the rest of the city council, all white, stand with communities of
color and approve McManus, or will they capitulate to the will of the
Police Federation whose goodwill towards racial minorities is
questionable?
Robert Lillegren has now gone on record of opposing McManus.
