I agree with Mark's statement that the issue before
the council should be about whether or not McManus
will make a good chief or not. To me, the glaringly
obvious issue os that there are some council members
who SUPPORT and APPROVE OF police brutality.

There is no other reason to push so hard for the
reapointment of John Laux (Lubinsky or Gerold) other
than you don't believe there is a need for reform, and
you approve of the way the Minneapolis Police
department condicted itself during the late 80's/early
90's.

At least Barb Johnson has actually made this statement
point blank. You can almost see the smile on her face
every time someone not convicted of a crime is beaten
up or killed by the police. Many of us remember her
very cruel comment about the "faily business" in
regards to the high school honors student that was
beaten by the police. I give her points for honesty.
She seems to know exactly what she's doing.

The rest of those council members, (Robert what's
happened to you!!) who would prefer John Laux over
William McManus should talk to some of of those who
were on the council when Olson was first appointed as
police chief.

Ask them why having an MPD insider didn't work. Why
were so few council members willing to consider
reappointing Laux, and why choose Olson who at the
time seemed like a reformer. Ask them about the
issues at the time and apply them to this situation.
Hopefully some of the CMs who were around at this time
could give us some background.

I'm sure most council members who truly want
improvement in police community will come to the
conclusion that McManus is worth hearing out and
probably a better choice than the other four.
