WM: But in the end, we still got another straight, white male. Ho and
then hum. I'm not impressed. This guy does not necessarily ever think
outside his privilege. There appears to be no reason for him to do so,
since his privilege has stood him in good stead, advanced his career,
etc. No matter how you slice it, we're getting a pig in a poke (no
disrespect to officers intended). We have no idea whether he will prove
out, whether he will move in a year or two. We know virtually nothing
about him
PS: While I can't claim that I know a lot about McManus, it's obvious
that WM knows nothing about him. She should've used "I" instead of "We."
Not only do her bigoted comments regarding McManus give identity
politics the bad name it generally deserves, but it provides further
ammunition to opponents of affirmative action.
Again, like some of the skeptics on this list, including Eva Young and
Wizard Marks as well, I am concerned that McManus plans to leave his
current position just two years after he assumed it. Nor was I thrilled
to read that his boss, the Mayor of Dayton, was taken by surprise upon
learning of his anticipated departure. This makes me wonder if he has
thin skin or is prone to battle fatigue. While I'm confident that
Minneapolis can hold McManus to a 4-year contract, I worry that a longer
duration as Police Chief might take the fight out of him when it comes to
dealing with rogue cops. McManus and the Mayor would do well to put our
minds at ease on this score.
Given my intense displeasure with Mayor Rybak on several occasions, I
feel a moral obligation to support him when I think he is doing the right
thing. Unless, I come across any disturbing facts about McManus, I must
stick to my current position that Rybak made the best possible choice in
selecting our next Police Chief.
