The first shot rang out at about 11:40 p.m. Two drug deals had gone down within sight of my Hawthorne home even before Christmas eve had passed, and the gang activity was escalating. An older woman and a child ran from the crime scene screaming, while a younger woman jumped into one of the gangbanger's favorite wheels, the last of the rear drive GM intermediates, and raced off. Our police department that our mayor wants shaken up promptly responded but found nothing. Minutes after MPD left the gangbangers started up again, with an argument in front of 2515 3rd Street North and the firing of another shot. Take note of that address, you've probably saw it on TV last summer when the gangbangers kidnapped a child there when his hooker mother didn't pay her drug debt. MPD responded again, mustering 7 squads and promptly bringing the situation under control. MPD then spent over an hour thoroughly processing the crime scene. Thanks to Minneapolis' Police Officers quick action neither an ambulance or the coroner's Suburban was needed and everyone was able to walk away from the scene, including the perp in handcuffs.

I'd planned on finishing my historical novelette of pre Stonewall christmas gayity, but I'm too sick of heart after the reality of last nights events to write further. Clearly Minneapolis was a safer city for even a bunch of drag queens in the 1950s than it is for any citizen today.

hanging on in Hawthorne,
