I take the statements by Lt. Edwards' very seriously. He's a stand-up guy. As an officer he knows what he's doing. What I heard in his statements to the commission is that there are die hards in the department who insist that they have every right to get in your face with their bigotry. If you object, then you're some sort of trouble maker from a management viewpoint. If you're a trouble maker, then we won't ever promote you. You'll get to lieutenant and stay there and you won't get into investigations and homicide as a plain clothes officer. I think those statements pretty much sum up what we see in the streets.

As an immigrant to MN, I can say that Minnesotans do not care for blunt speech, on the whole. To say something straight up no chaser is to automatically offend the sensibilities of a great many Minnesotans. This is the knot in the weaving that has got to be untied without ruining the fabric of
community. How do we help the police department do that?
