[Mpls] Nomination Process

Some haven�t written this is not an election. They are correct it is not an election, however it is a nomination process, much like the president has when appointing cabinet heads and judicial appointments. Part of the process includes input from various groups, which has been done in the past i.e the labor and justice departments. The process also includes legislative approval. This provides for a checks and balance system. In this case the city council is the checks and balance. I applauded those city council members who are willing to ask the tough questions and those that are willing to go the extra mile. It is their job to ask the tough questions and not be a rubber stamp of approval. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. Second point I would like to make many of those who say we need an outsider to change the police department were the same people saying the same thing when Chief Olson was appointed. Whether you like or dislike Chief Olson he has done a great job of promoting some very good command staff including the two internal candidates. Both of them started in law enforcement when it was a male only world, so both of them have a very good understanding what is like looking from the outside in the police world. I will also say that the answer is not always found on the outside. The Fire Chief Rocco is a very great example of that. An internal candidate has seen the mistakes and progresses that have been made. They also have a sense of the community and history of the city and police department. The internal candidates also know those department members who will work hard to make changes. I hope the city council takes a long hard look before the become a rubber stamp of approval.
