The geographic split on the Council may be even
more complicated than that.
If..if..Barb Johnson (4th ward) and Scott Benson
(11th) cast the deciding votes in favor of McManus,
then we will have the McManus votes coming from two
types of wards:
The most distressed parts of the city-the 5th ward
(Johnson Lee), 6th ward (Zimmerman) and the Northside
part of the 3rd ward.
The wards that are:
A. The whitest
B. The highest percentage of homeowners
These wards include the 13th ward (Lane), 11th ward
(Benson) 4th ward (Barb Johnson) and the 1st ward
(Ostrow).
The Council members against McManus are coming from
the transitional areas of the city which have a high
percentage of renters. People in these wards are
worried about crime than in the white homeowner
neighborhoods. These wards include the 9th ward
(Schiff),7th ward (Goodman), and the 10th ward
(Niziolek). These wards have the highest
concentrations of GLBT people and lots of single women
living alone or with roommates.
The 10th and 7th wards have some wealthy
neighborhoods, but the transitional renter areas are
the majority.
Some Council members don't fit the geographic
pattern-Sandy Colin Roy (12th ward) and Robert
Lillegren (8th ward). Paul Zerby (2nd)has a renter
ward, maybe crime is less important, maybe not as many
GLBT people.
