Park Board President Jon Olson is quoted in the Star Trib 1/13
(http://www.startribune.com/stories/462/4315524.html) as saying in reference to the
hiring of
Interim Superintendent Gurban, "The understanding was it was a one-year contract.
That's it. We're
committed to going out and reopening the search."

At the same time, I believe Former President Fine expressed at a meeting that Gurban
could retain
the job because there was a majority in favor of him.

Superintendent Gurban made a significant leap of faith in leaving his previous
position. In his
shoes, I would only have made that leap of faith if I was confident of retaining the
job beyond
the one year mark.

There is significant tension between these things that will reduce potential
candidates' interest
in participating in the selection process. I'd like to see the Board recognize the
tension and
sign a pledge committing to full consideration for every candidate with no
preferential treatment
for Mr. Gurban. Anything less will sacrifice the quality of the next candidate pool.
