Today's Sunday paper had an articles about the Mayor's efforts to get a
stadium in Mpls.
Last week, I saw coverage of the Mayor in the Skyway System, meeting and
greeting people to lobby for a new stadium.
I remember reading an article the Mayor wrote shortly after Paul Wellstone
died, referring to "Stand Up - Keep Fighting."
Keeping my word, I did not banner or picket the Mayor's New Year's Eve
fundraiser-- quietly stood outside.
Nothing to bring home the class differences in our society than standing
outside that fundraiser and seeing the local rich and influential drive by to
the party. One woman barely avoiding running into me and three young people
telling people where to park for the fundraiser. She decided to drive over the
curb and onto the sidewalk in her hurry to get to the party. She did not stop,
did not apologize...just kept on driving.
Kind of a metaphor for the way our local politics seem to run.... no
matter who it hurts, just keep on rolling over people.
Stand Up- Keep Fighting seems to translate into singing "Take me out to
the ballgame."
And justice for all--- translates into subsidizing billionaires who hold
our cities hostage with sports stadiums.
The land of opportunity translates into the land of opportunists.
And, we the people are responsible for allowing this state of affairs to
continue.
If that stadium gets built...it will be a public disgrace.
