Seems to me that no matter what we do to alter roadways, people will
either disregard it, or circumvent it. On the block where I live, it's
a one way street for one block. The neighborhood got it changed to
discourage crackheads and their dealers. It has been a success for the
most part, but some people refuse to observe the law, and drive the
wrong way at high speed to lessen the chance of being caught. I've
told kids in the neighborhood to look both ways before crossing, but
they point to the one way sign and say they don't have to. Don't
always believe what you read is my usual response.(It's only a matter
of time before someone gets run down.) Speed bumps only work if one
cares about their car. Speed limits? Yeah, right.
I know that there has been an increase in police manpower to address
the issue, but it will never be enough. In addition to traffic
calming, I think we need driver calming. Much stiffer penalties for
moving violations, vehicle confiscation, whatever it takes. It's not
the roads fault if people are morons. Changing roads is expensive. We
should make driving irresponsibly so expensive, people might think
twice. In Russia, you lose your license for life with one DUI. No
appeal, no trial, you're done. In Turkey, they take you,and if you're
married they'll stop at your house and get your spouse and drop you
both off 20 miles from town and let you walk back. Sound bad? Not if
it changes behavior.
Recently on local radio, someone suggested a razor sharp eight-inch
spike in the center of the steering wheel pointed at ones chest would
make most people more careful drivers. Not bad, not a bad idea at all
;)
