||Constance Nompelis|| > I'm neither a journalist nor an elected official, but > I ride the bus! > > (And I'm a Republican too, how about that!) > Connie, of course Republicans ride the bus too. Its a shame that people have come to think that using public transportation is a partisan issue. If fact I'm very confused why more Republicans don't champion mass transit. Mass transit is about the economy, its about people getting to jobs, its about bringing business to the city/region, its about reducing the nation's dependence on foreign oil... (of course its also about environment, public health, etc... too.)
Former Phoenix mayor Skip Rimsza (Republican mayor of a Republican city) was in town last week to speak to members of local chambers of commerce about mass transit. Skip Rimsza championed Phoenix Proposition number 2000 which passed with 65% of the vote. The Proposition read: "An ordinance for a comprehensive plan to improve Phoenix's public transportation system and traffic flow with an expanded bus system and light rail transit to relieve traffic congestion, help reduce air pollution and provide the people of Phoenix with more transportation choices." The proposition is to be funded with a TAX INCREASE of 0.4 cents per dollar for 20 years. Peter McLaughlin was at some of events where Mayor Rimsza spoke, I hope he can weigh in with some information/insight about how Minneapolis can learn from the Phoenix lesson.
