In any case, money is currently being spent as you read this to remodel
Pratt for the new use scheduled for next fall. It will be a waste of money
in major proportions if the remodeling work is completed just in time for
the start of the demolition of the building.

You bring up a good point and an issue that I hope does not come up. The last round of school closings in the late 70s/ early 80s left us unprepared to handle another boom in school aged children.

Instead of just holding on to the school buildings, the school board decided to just get rid of them either through sale or complete demolition. We lost several historic structures in the process. Bremer School on Lowry and Emerson Ave N. was the exception- it was converted to condominiums and still holds a place on the National Register. A nearly identical 1880s school building in southwest Mpls was not nearly as fortunate.

Perhaps a temporary lease program to artist or neighborhood groups could be assembled so we don't go through this mess again. Keep the schools for better fiscal times instead razing and consolidating into suburban style mega-schools. The ever controversial Sayles-Belton did one great thing in her tenure as mayor, she pushed for the return of neighborhood schools, let's try to keep them that way.

With an ever wordy ranting from Audubon
