Gary Schiff said:

"These buildings tell a story about the development of
a community and the need for government services,"
said Zoning Committee Chairman Gary Schiff. His ward
includes Howe and Cooper schools, which are among five
that a district planning committee has recommended be
torn down.

I say:

My sincere hope is that parents and the school board
can find a way out of closing these buildings. If that
doesn't happen and the final decision is to close them
as schools, they most certainly shouldn't be torn
down. Historical preservation rational aside, these
buildings would convert very easily to "affordable
housing", transistional housing, supportive housing or
shelter care. They are strong solid structures. The
old Whittier School was converted in the 1970's to an
affordable housing cooperative. It's been a very
successful project.
