WM: Thanks for the compliment. When I arrived in Mpls. on an airplane in what I came to know as a blizzard (something I'd never seen before), it was to visit friends. I came back six months later, it was summer, I was hooked. I saw the Northshore up at Grand Marais and thought I'd found heaven and they were letting me in. Kewl! I settled here in Minneapolis because, in my terms, it is semi-arid so breathing is much better. The question about why would anyone settle in Minneapolis could lead to a good discussion. ...Dennis Plante, Wizard Marks or Barbara Lickness that caused them to make a difference in their neighborhoods, other than that they were willing to try.
Personally, I really like Minneapolis, I love my neighborhood, rough and ready though it be, and many of my neighbors have been long time friends by this juncture. Before I came here I had been a stage hand and even though I didn't want to hump scenery any more or fiddle with any of the other stuff that goes with theaters, I like having theater opportunities in varied settings and venues. Then there's the Powderhorn Puppet parade on May Day. There are enough Irish so I don't have to become weepy nostalgic over my heritage, but can keep it clearly in focus. It's neat to have a lake every little whip stitch, it calms the mind to look out across the lakes.
The friends I've made here are treasures which bless my life. I have a big old barn of a house on a major commercial corridor, so there is a panoply of life right out the dining room window. My housemates are very dear. I can put food on the table and afford to feed the cat, there's a library 8 blocks away. What more could I ask?
I keep doing stuff in the neighborhood cause it makes everyone feel better to have some dangerous stuff move along and because I'm still angry that my neighborhood had been red-lined for so long and so ignorantly. Thirty years ago Central was a totally cool neighborhood. Then the city, banks, insurance companies began to deliberately open it up to degradation.
I also stayed because Minnesota doesn't have a death penalty which signals to me that it is a progressive place at the heart of all matters human.
