My van was at the car spa for the afternoon (net-hundred bucks an hour/ 5 plus hours). I asked to be dropped off at The Bean Scene, Corner of Penn & West Broadway. I planned on some free Internet at the "computer bar", a sunny table in the Atrium for updating paper work, and then one of the modern couches for magazine perusal, and cool Jazz/Soul listening on the low-low. Yes, the current art exhibit on the walls was fabulous; highlighting Black History Month via local artists' offerings. Even, the sparkling clean, "hands free" men's room is a singular delight.
But, what I stepped in on there changed all my plans for the afternoon. National Coffee Month (or whatever the name) meant The Scene's impresario Dean Rose was hosting a Coffee sampling, and tasting event. No simple, or modest deal, this!! I should have had a seat belt; and a parachute. Ohhh, the delight. A two hour caffeine and flavor fest for plunking down a $5 dollar bill. I got there late but was quickly brought up to speed. East Timor brew first, then two kinds of Jamaican. Colombian, Peruvian, Guatemala, Sumatra were all sniffed, and then quaffed. We proceeded to compare light roasts, dark roasts, presspot, brewed, and espresso-ed. We were presented mocha discs the size of quarters, to sample; both light and dark. Then out rolled the steaming, straight, hot mochas. Then the mocha cappuccinos with fresh whipped creme. I'm flying now; Peter Pan style. But this was not to be simply pure excess. NO! We needed to offer new names for the drinks being formulated before our eyes. My entry, Mocha Chocolatta Ya-Ya, garnered aye's, so did another's: Chocolatier's Delight. Crazy? Perhaps; but we were all smiling, if you know what I mean. This event continues during February. In March there will be a Mardi Gras Festive Wine/Coffee Sampling Event, CO-hosted with neighboring Broadway Liquor Outlet. And of course, a new art display. "Make the scene, at the Bean Scene" on West Broadway. Keith Reitman NearNorth REMINDERS: 1. Think a member has violated the rules?
