Closing a school because it's small seems completely backwards to me. One reason parents choose private and charter schools is because they are small. The dollar savings in these school closings are not great and should be weighed against other factors, like - Will the closed school immediately re-open as a charter, costing the district yet more money? (This happened at Bottineau, another small and beloved school. It was closed because it was in a leased facility and opened this fall as a charter.) Will the dollar savings offset the loss of community support?
This is a complex problem, and I do think the schools need to adjust to what parents want. But in the case of small schools, that means keeping at least some of them open.
