Against the backdrop of the grand plans for a new stadium the plans also continue to
end funding for 150 shelter "beds" April 15th.
Last April 15th over 100 men were forced onto the street when 519 Portland was shut
down.
And when that shelter shut down-- last April, please do not assume that a proactive
contingency plan had been put in place for those men.
I was there that last night and none of them had heard squat about where they could
go-- and neither had the staff.
The next night many showed up at "Safe Bay" -don't you just love these names?
And many, many, many did not get in. the next night fewer showed up-- (gave up,
went to campout or find somewhere to seek a place on the street)---
Those full 100 spots were never fully replaced. The City did wind up putting up
money for more spots (did not make up for all the lost spots) until the County kicked
money back in, in the fall.
So,now--- there will be more attrition.
