O.K. So the school closings have been postponed for awhile. The original rationale behind the recommendations as I understood it was prompted by a $20M deficit in next years operating budget.
If we are postponing the school closings, then how will the operating deficit be dealt with? Whittier cut 21% out of its operating budget last year. Believe me as one of the people who had the scissors in hand, it was heart wrenching. How deep a cut will the $20M deficit hit this years upcoming budgeting process if no schools are closed. Will the cuts come across the board? I also heard that the school system was going to discontinue providing hand washing soap in the bathrooms to save money. Is this true? If so, that is ridiculous. That is probably the number 1 public health remedy we teach kids is to wash their hands. Somebody in the know please respond. Anybody got a a plan B for dealing with the deficit without completely decimating the schools? I would love to see some ideas discussed here.
