In several major cities across America (especially out in California) the initiatives have at least started by converting all government buildings to renewable energy sources - predominately solar out there. So not just limited to schools, but parks, libraries, etc. Hennepin County ( an many counties) has new "green" sustainability building standards being used for new and rehabbed construction. This is not rocket science folks, it is just the will to do it. The sooner the better in order to start saving money at some point. The more organizations and entities that do the conversion the sooner the upfront costs will start coming down for everyone concerned.
As I have said in many of my public speeches Minneapolis is a very "green" city (compared to many) due to our urban forest and water resources. It's time we take the next steps forward into a sustainable future for our children's sake.

Dear Mayor Raymond Thomas,
Although the complexity of the current situation may
be over my head, here is an idea I thought of right
away. Combine the cities recent partnership with the
"Million Solar Roofs" project, with lowering the
operating costs for our schools! I don't know what the
current average cost per year is for electricity and
heat, but I imagine if all the schools did what the
Green Institute is doing right now, that would be a
major decrese in operating expence.
I don't know about the numbers yet, like where the
investment money comes from (I think McKnight
foundation has a granting program) or when the break
even point would be. But if we allready have a
commitment to outfit 500 buildings, how many schools
are there?
After the solar roof is paid for it could mean a 60%
cut from school energy budgets. That was the number
Green Institute used, it would be ideal to get those
buildings TOTALY self sustainable and have NO energy
expence. It's 2004, do belive the technology is
available.
