Combine the cities recent partnership with the "Million Solar Roofs" project, with lowering the operating costs for our schools! I don't know what the current average cost per year is for electricity and heat, but I imagine if all the schools did what the Green Institute is doing right now, that would be a major decrese in operating expence. I don't know about the numbers yet, like where the investment money comes from (I think McKnight foundation has a granting program) or when the break even point would be. But if we allready have a commitment to outfit 500 buildings, how many schools are there? After the solar roof is paid for it could mean a 60% cut from school energy budgets. That was the number Green Institute used, it would be ideal to get those buildings TOTALY self sustainable and have NO energy expence. It's 2004, do belive the technology is available.
