McManus commands attention

Whatever folks may think of Minneapolis' new police chief, he has
wasted little time in making his presence felt.

Ten days into his administration, Bill McManus stunned the department
when he suspended three top police officials in the case of officer
Duy Ngo, who last year was shot six times by another officer.

A day before the suspensions, McManus apologized to Ngo and
squelched rumors that Ngo had shot himself.

The chief's dramatic moves left some wondering if he may
have needlessly alienated his own troops early in his term.

Although I don't like to see police officers whose reputations are called into
question, I believe public services like a police department means public scrutiny,
including coverage by the mass media. We all must remember that we as a community
have very serious issues between the community residents and the Minneapolis
Police department. If officers can shoot and nearly kill their own, why would
anyone in the general public have any confidence a police department.
