I feel it is important to forward this invite to this list. I believe we can
instigate change as a city-wide community by sending a strong message of
peace.

The following message is being sent to you from Council Member Don Samuels:

Dear Friends,

Last week, many of you came to stand with me at a vigil I held in honor of
Jason Barry, a young man who was shot to death last Monday, February 23rd,
as he brought friends home from a night out. I learned a lot about Jason
last week. He was 31 years old, a good father to two sons, and a good
friend, who on the night of his murder was serving as designated driver. I
attended his funeral yesterday. So too did 700 others. Jason was well
loved and well respected. His funeral was perhaps the saddest I have
attended, the overflowing church a testament to how Jason had lived.
Perhaps the saddest thing was that the life of this young man with so much
potential was cut short by the bullet of a killer.

Unbelievably, last night, on the evening of Jason's funeral, as friends and
relatives gathered at the site of the murder in remembrance of him, violence
struck again. At around 10:30pm, a car pulled up and shot into the crowd,
tragically killing another young man.

Tomorrow, Sunday, February 29th, I will once again hold a vigil at 209 33rd
Avenue North to call attention to this senseless loss of life and the need
for the end of the violence that is destroying our community. I am inviting
you to join me. Let us send a message that violence is not the answer, and
that our vigilance will not be deterred. Let us show those who would prefer
we live in fear that we are just as unyielding, just as steadfast, just as
committed to peace as they are destruction, and that we will not stop until
all of us are safe. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

The details:

Where: 209 33rd Avenue North

When: Sunday, February 29th

            10:00am to 6:00pm

Your presence at any time tomorrow is welcome, if even for a short time.

Peace,

Don Samuels
