Don Samuels' representing the Third Ward on the Minneapolis
City Council may be seen as an extension of a bigger goal.

Samuels said he and his wife moved to Minneapolis Jordan
neighborhood -- an area plagued by poverty and crime -- because
they wanted to set an example for young people in the area.

"I understand what access does to the minds of people,
Samuels said, referring to his own childhood in Jamaica.
Without presence [of other successful people, children]
will never have a concrete view [of] the good life.
Samuels has spent a year in office this month. He said that
by staying visible, accessible and sincere, he and his wife
have made a difference on the mindsets of those growing
up in Jordan.

We have affected the lives of all the children in our
neighborhood, he said. Since we moved onto our block,
no child has joined a gang. I challenge any kid in my
neighborhood to join a gang -- because then he will
have to deal with me.
