The Dakota people were on the river when the French came. Trails had been cleared. Commerce was going up and down the river to St. Louis and on to New Orleans. They just were not called by those names.

Europeans seldom came into wild areas and made anything. They usurped and built on existing areas made tenable by Native people.

When we forget that, we forget what not to do in the future.
