One possible library merger strategy would combine the new Mpls. downtown
central library with the Hennepin County system, eliminate the Mpls. Library
Board of Trustees, and make the Director responsible for neighborhood
libraries in the city.

Why don't we just *privatize* the library system and run it like a business. Isn't the private sector the answer to all of our financial woes??

Seriously though,
I could foresee problems with funding the media in the library system itself. Would books bought by the city for community libraries be available for Hennepin county patrons or vice versa. Also there is the problem of sharing in general, Minneapolis hates to share, especially with their suburban counterparts.
It would also be interesting to see what percentage of patrons at the central library are from Hennepin County but not from Minneapolis, that would certainly influence the decision making process. I will poke around to see if those numbers are around.
