There has been a push by concerned parents, students and residents of MPLS to get the MPLS School Board to put make their "unofficial policy" that irradiated meat will not be served to our kids an official one. While Minneapolis currently does NOT purchase irradiated meat, thanks to Interim Food Services Director Rosemary Dederichs, there is no mechanism in place to know how long this informal policy will be in effect nor if it is changed that the public will get to have a say in it or even know about it.
Request to the school board to establish a formal policy, even one with a "sunset" on it so the issue can readdressed in five years, has been rejected. The Minneapolis School Board, at the urging of Interim Superintendent Jennings, has decided that they will continue to have an informal policy. Today at the Minneapolis School Board meeting concerned parents, students and residents will question this decision during the open comment time that should start at about 5:00 PM. The address of the School Boards offices is located at 807 NE Broadway. But individual citizens are free to raise that or any issue in the public comment period at the end of board meetings. That's not likely to produce a board discussion today for two reasons. One, the board usually lets citizens speak without getting into an immediate discussion. Two, the board discussed this matter in mid-March and decided informally not to change its policy on purchasing irradiated beef, which is not to have a policy. I did a brief story on this, but it apparently never appeared in the paper. Steve Brandt Staff writer Star Tribune Phone: 612-673-4438 Fax: 612-673-4359 425 Portland Av.
