I learned that Minneapolis Fire Chief Rocco Forte is being bullied into
leaving his position as Fire Chief from the Rybak administration over a
pension dispute. Chief Forte heads Americas most diverse fire department
both with respect to fire fighters of color and command staff of color.
Chief Forte has been a member of the Minneapolis Fire Department for over 3
decades and he participates in the cities old pension plan that only has
between 10-15 members remaining in it. If Chief Forte were to retire today
under his current pension plan he would only receive 50 percent of his
salary as a fire fighter not a commander. Chief Forte has asked to switch to
the Minneapoliss newer pension plan that would allow him to receive 100
percent of his salary once he retires like every other fire fighter that
retires after 25 years of service. Sources have told me that Chief Forte has
been told that he could switch to the citys newer pension plan if he would
accept a position in Regulatory Services. Chief Forte has put in many years
of service to the citizens of Minneapolis and politics is going to force
Americas best chief to leave his passion in order to receive the
compensation that he has earned. I will activity campaign against any
council member or the mayor if Chief Forte is not allowed to continue as
Chief of the Minneapolis Fire Department. The mayor and city council
stripped his budget a few years ago forcing him to layoff some firefighters
mostly people of color and women because of seniority. Chief Forte was able
to bring them all back fortunately. Chief Forte is the best fire chief in
the country and any politician that forces him to leave the department will
not be happy come Election Day.
