A Mpls-only bus system would be unworkable. What
about transit beyond the city limits?

It would be ridiculous for the poor inner cities to
secede from the metro area. We would be "independent"
and broke like Washington, DC or an Indian Reservation
wothout a casino.

Victoria Heller explained the absurdity of
secession better than I can.

Some problems can't be solved by surrendering.

Some problems can't be solved by running away.

Some problems can't be solved by talking about
hypothetical future solutions.

This strike is a regional/class war. The strike
will go on for months-unless we demonstate the
strength to shut down parts of the metro economy.

We did not choose this battle. But the battle is
raging and all of us have a lot at state. I am a bus
rider, not a union member.

Somebody (the Transit Workers) finally stood up to
Pawlenty and the House Republicans! Senate DFL'ers are
fighting back this year.

If the transit-haters win, they will cut transit
even more.

The next paragraphs are about national issues, but
they are relevant to what I am talking about.

What could we do if Kerry wins a clear-cut victory
in the election and Bush refuses to leave office? Send
emails? Wear black armbands? Go on a hunger strike?
Fret and dither?

Bush himself wouldn't do such a thing-but some of
his people might prefer a dictatorship instead of a
Kerry Presidency.

Remember the Gingrich shutdown of the Federal Govt,
the Clinton impeachment and the ruthlessness of the
Bush/Cheney adminstration. We have a lot to worry
about.

During the Watergate crisis, there was a
possibility that Nixon would refuse to obey the
Supreme Court, or even attempt a coup and make himself
a dictator.

After the Saturday Night Massacre I remember the
AFL-CIO talking about the possibility of a nationwide
general strike if Nixon went too far. Maybe it was
George Meany who talked about a general strike.
