It took a little longer than most parents probably liked and the kids are gonna be grumpy when it's time to get up for school tomorrow, but the season opener is in the books with a 7-4 comeback victory for your Minnesota Twins!
Shannon Stewart was the hero of the day, knocking in a 3-run walkoff in the bottom of the 11th. Brad Radke struggled through his six innings, giving up four runs on a ton o' hits, but the Indians did the home team a big favor and took out Twins killer C.C. Sabathia after the seventh. The Twins promptly rallied in the bottom of the eighth, scoring four runs to knot it up. Local phenom Joe Mauer made his major league debut, walking on four pitches in his first at-bat and getting his first hit with a single in the bottom of the ninth. Mauer finished the night going 2-3, with 2 walks and 2 runs scored. A.J. Who? :-) And the new FieldTurf? Pretty! Almost looks like real grass. Too bad the team couldn't have gotten more time to practice on it, though. It'll definitely be an adjustment from the torn carpet of previous seasons. At least Torii Hunter won't have to worry so much about rug burns during those diving catches, though. Cool sign of the night: the giant banner behind the left-field foul pole: "If you build it we will come" Cool T-shirt of the night: Twinsville!
