During a recent discussion with David Strom of the Taxpayer's League, he brought up the point that transit simply does not create adequate mobility for the poor. The majority of jobs are out in the suburbs, and the bus system can only bring them around the central cities.
I've asked him for the financial details of his "give everyone a car" plan. It sounds kind of ridiculous, but I have no real data on that one way or the other. But it did get me to thinking. Why do suburban buses only go one direction? They drop people off in Minneapolis, and then what? Do they go back out to the suburbs empty? If they do, this seems like a complete waste. I really don't know how the routes work, so maybe someone can educate me on this. The point is, isn't there a way to bus people out to the suburbs without making any extra trips? --Jeff Rosenberg Cedar/Riverside . . . Who is reluctantly agreeing with David Strom on something.
