Lisa Goodman who lives next door was very thankful for the amount of care taken in addressing the needs of the neighborhood. The renovation appears to fit into the Harmon Historic District very well, and as Ms. Goodman said, it is putting the property back on the tax rolls (it has been exempt for 15 or so years).
Now here's the problem, this project looks great, but what about the other proposed CVS Pharmacies on 37th and Central NE and University and 10th street SE. Gary Schiff of the CPC and Ward 9 CM quipped to the developer 'Can we make the project at University look this good?'. That's a good question for CVS. They partnered with a housing developer for the downtown project, why not the others? They are trying to pull the same 'big box' crap like the store in St. Paul's Midway. 37th and Central Avenue NE is an important gateway into the city. Some say CVS is better than the HI-LO Motel which currently occupies the site, but I say let's not trade blight for just anything. I understand that Waite Park approved their intial plans, why not create some mixed use instead of another landscaped parking lot.
Same goes for the 10th and University site. It is within a block of the U of M and thousands of people that walk and bike daily. CVS still resists putting doors or even windows on the streetside. Let's not let them run the show, make some demands and stick to our guns. We want more mixed use, let's make it happen! I mean come on, there's no demand for housing near the U of M? Look at the recent Grand Marc project on Cedar and Washington Ave.
Sean Ryan Free of big box in Audubon although still unsure about the Clare Housing at 3rd and Central NE.
