Posted on Tue, Apr. 20, 2004 Stanek's return to force debated Stanek, a 21-year veteran of the force, is poised to return to his job as a police captain part of an interagency agreement between the city and the state a year ago. But legal agreement or not, several leaders in the African-American community say he shouldn't be allowed back on the force. RUBN ROSARIO: Stanek says he 'was caught by surprise' With equally contentious confirmation proceedings involving the education and transportation commissioners, political and law enforcement insiders speculated Stanek was the most vulnerable for political sacrifice. In fact, Stanek seemed confident that the man who had appointed him to the post would stick by him Friday, even after a political critic, House Rep. Keith Ellison, DFL-Minneapolis, had called for his ouster. "We had actually strategized what was going to be said at (Ellison's) news conference,'' Stanek said Friday after tendering his resignation. "The governor seemed supportive.'' Then Stanek got a call as he was meeting with Sen. Leo Foley, who chairs the Senate's Public Safety and Crime Prevention Committee. "We need to talk,'' Pawlenty told Stanek over the phone. This was not a good sign. http://www.twincities.com Posted By Shawn Lewis, Field Neighborhood -- ___________________________________________________________ Sign-up for Ads Free at Mail.com http://promo.mail.com/adsfreejump.htm REMINDERS: 1.
