I thought I'd make a couple of points about the Stanek
saga, mostly because I'm home all day and really have
nothing better to do.

First, I'm not going to dispute that Rich Stanek is an
abrasive jerk with extreme racist tendencies, (I was
raising alarms about Stanek's appointment before
anyone cared) but the policies that people are
concerned with, such as the visa info on drivers
licenses and other policies that are racially
insensitive, are policies on which Tim Pawlenty
campaigned and continues to advocate.

I hope Keith Ellison and others continue to turn the
heat up on Pawlenty and don't stop just because we
don't have Rich Stanek to kick us around anymore.

Pawlenty and his policies are the problem. The
commissioners he appoints (including Carol Maulnau
(sp?) I don't buy that he really supports the
Northstar Rail) only reflect his agenda.

Second, I don't see how RT Rybak or Bill McManus can
quietly accept Rich Stanek back on the force after
this, especially given the internal changes within the
MPD.

The Pioneer Press is reporting the Barb Johnson "feels
bad about what happened and will be happy to have
Stanek back on the force." I wonder if she'd also
like to invite Trent Lott to address the Minneapolis
City Council and talk about what a wonderful president
the segregationist Strom Thurmond would have been.

Personally, although I'm happy with Stanek's
resignation, I feel that he'll do much more damage as
a Minneapolis police officer that as a regulatory
bureaucrat. It's also not going to change Tim
Pawlenty's policies or attitudes towards the people
about whom he obviously doesn't give a ****.

I just hope they find a way to keep Stanek in St. Paul
or Maple Grove. We're just finally beginning to fix
our problems with our own police department.
