5TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT GREEN PARTY CANDIDATE ENDORSING CONVENTION
MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- The 5th Congressional District Green Party will hold its
endorsing convention on Sunday, May 23, 2004 to consider endorsing
candidates wishing to run as Greens in the 2004 elections. The meeting will
be held at Park House, 2120 Park Ave, Minneapolis starting at 12:00 PM.
Darrell Gerber, chair of the local party, says, "Despite this being a light
year for local elections we have had several candidates approach us seeking
endorsement for state house and Minneapolis School Board races. We also have
a candidate seeking Green Party endorsement in a race for the 5th
Congressional District seat currently held by Martin Sabo."
The endorsing convention will begin with an hour long "Candidate
Meet-and-Greet" at noon before moving on to formal candidate speeches,
question and answer periods, and the vote on endorsement by Green Party
members.
The Green Party has long advocated for the use of alternative voting methods
in public elections that allow for more democratic elections. The 5th
District Greens will be using Instance Runoff Voting (IRV) in the endorsing
votes. Gerber notes, "We believe it's important for us to use the electoral
reforms we're advocating. IRV has worked very well for us in the past and
we'll continue to use it internally as well as advocate for its adoption for
public elections."
Minnesota's 5th Congressional District includes the communities of Columbia
Heights, Crystal, Fort Snelling, Fridley, Golden Valley, Hilltop,
Minneapolis, New Hope, Richfield, Robbinsdale, Spring Lake Park, St.
Anthony, St. Louis Park, and most of Hopkins. The goals of the 5th
Congressional District Green Party are to engage in electoral politics and
social action to promote the values of Ecological Wisdom, Social and
Economic Justice, Grassroots Democracy, and Nonviolence and to help create a
more democratic, just and sustainable society where people live in harmony
with the Earth and each other.

That's one of the risks involved when the convention chooses not to endorse for all of the available spots in a multi-way race.
People also need to remember that this is no longer a one party city. There are at least two people running for the Green Party endorsement (Doug Mann and Kari Tauring - there may be more) and I believe that the Greens will pick their candidates in the next week or two (can anyone confirm the date?).
Especially with the DFL and generally unfocused anger at "the establishment" over a number of issues (including a lack of community involvement in major decisions) this could easily become a wide open race. I'd suggest actually seeing what candidates have to say rather then voting a straight party ticket.
