I hope enjoyed this update on the West Boardway Area

West Broadway Area Coalition
memo for week of May 19, 2004

+ Greetings from WBAC. This is your weekly W. B'Way update.
Please share your ideas, feedback, or additions to the
email list. Also let us know if you prefer to be off
this email list.

RECENT ACTIVITIES

+ The good work of folks along West Broadway are getting
noticed across the city. Recent Minneapolis StarTribune
coverage highlights these neighbors:
--The Casserly sisters and their Lundstrum Center for
the Performing Arts.
--Teen moms who write poetry and fiction at The Broadway
School in a program in partnership with The Loft Literary Center.
--Bill Reiling of Sunrise Community Bank who has a history
of financing renovation in opportunity sectors of town, and
who told Mayor R.T. Rybak that he is is interested in West Broadway.
--Shiloh Temple International Ministries minister and
bishop Richard Howells life experience with the landmark
Supreme Courts Brown vs. Board of Education ruling that
against school segregation in 1954.

More stories to come of West Broadway talent and hard work...

+ WBAC, with NRRC and Jordan Neighborhood, received
commercial corridor initiative funds to be used for
technical assistance for housing and mixed use development
on the Avenue. The grant includes help with architectural
services, facilitation and planning, access to developers.
Goals are to create a plan for the south side of Broadway
at Penn Ave., the north side of the curve and abandoned
gas stations. The competitive grant was awarded by the
Center for Neighborhoods.

+ Kari was at the Lundstrum C enter fund raiser, which
raised $25-30,000. Broadway performers and children put
on a great show.

+ Drawings for the renovation of historic structures at
1101 W. BWay showed prospective sites for restaurant and
small complementary shops. Kari has introduced a dry
cleaning business to the developer. Watch for details.

+ Kari and leaders of other neighborhood organizations
joined public officials on the podium at the dedication
festivities of the Plymouth Youth Centers new building.
The event also commemorated PYCs 50 years of service to
the community.

+ The IRS (the Internal Revenue Service!) has notified
WBAC that it has received our 501(c)3 application (as a
recognized nonprofit organization) to which it will respond within 120 days.
