Bill Dooley writes:

I believe I read somewhere that only 18% of Star Tribune readers live within the city limits of Minneapolis. Could this low number be true?

Paul Rohlfing replies:

With over 2,000,000 people in our Metro Area, Minneapolis 386,000 citizens come out pretty close to making up 18% of the metro areas total population.

If anything, the Strib probably gives the City of Minneapolis a disproportionate amount of ink given its size relative to the Metro Area as a whole (and, of that coverage, a lot is of the Fire and Murder variety that is the bread and butter of any major metro daily). The downside of trying to be The Newspaper of the Twin Cities, of course, is that (the great work of Steve Brandt notwithstanding) there really isnt a whole lot of meat in the Stribs local and neighborhood coverage for us wonkish, nerdy, Mpls List folks to chew on. I end up plowing through the City Pages, Pulse, SW Journal and Southside Pride to get a more complete sense of whats going on. To me, the Strib has value in that, because of its wider audience, it gives us Minneapolitans a sense of how our city is perceived by those who live elsewhere.
