MPS Board of Education Selects Thandiwe Peebles for Minneapolis Superintendent

At a Minneapolis Public Schools Board of Education meeting today, board members deliberated their final selection for Minneapolis Superintendent and voted unanimously to extend an offer to Thandiwe Peebles. Pending final contract agreement, Ms. Peebles will formally be named the new superintendent.

"We are confident in Ms. Peebles' abilities to lead the Minneapolis Public Schools during these challenging times and believe she will, in all things, do what's best for children," Sharon Henry-Blythe, Board Chairperson. "Ms. Peebles is the right fit for Minneapolis' next superintendent."

Thandiwe Peebles has 40 years of experience in the field of education as a teacher, principal and central office administrator. Ms. Peebles is currently the Regional Superintendent of Cleveland Municipal School District in Cleveland, Ohio, where she has served as the executive director of academic affairs and supervises core curriculum departments, as well as adult and continuing education, health and physical education, library media services and safe and drug-free schools. While working on her doctorate, Ms. Peebles offered her expertise as a consultant in reading, including areas of language arts, African history and culture, African-American history and culture and early childhood education.

Board members were particularly impressed with Peebles'ability to connect with community members during last week's community meetings. "She had an instant rapport with people," noted Board member Audrey Johnson. In addition, Peebles' proven track record with some of the most challenging schools in Cleveland and New York City received high marks from school board members.

The School Board designated Director Audrey Johnson to negotiate the superintendent's contract. Once an agreement has been reached, the entire contract will be made available to the public.

"We are anxious to welcome Ms. Peebles as Superintendent of the Minneapolis Public Schools and hope she will be able to start in the position by August," said Henry-Blythe.
