I'm surprised this topic has not yet surfaced.
I think it is about time we/the City begin discussions/taking actions to mitigate these problems which are occurring on the weekends at 2am. The papers and our professional football team are doing a great job of promoting these late-night problems. The police say that the 2am hour is their busiest time -who's paying for these late night patrols and subsequent bookings? Certainly not the suburbanites! ".the Police Department pays overtime to have additional officers there" (http://www.startribune.com/stories/462/4825214.html) More police cost more money. I could envision increasing the additional alcoholic beverage tax from 3% to 5%+ to pay for this additional police protection. City homeowners should not have to foot this bill. Does anyone know where these additional downtown entertainment taxes go? (to the MPD? -please, don't tell me the Convention Center) Like the smoking issue, this is a delicate balance of maintaining the health and safety of downtown patrons while not choking private businesses with excessive taxation and regulation.
