I could always find similar statistics and references that show the dangers of motor vehicles to drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and small children, but no one is proposing that we ban automobiles (although they probably should).



But making any kind of argument against a smoking ban by comparing it to automobiles would be a complete red herring and totally irrelevant to the issues. Motor vehicles provides numerous benefits to society. If all motor vehicles ceased functioning at noon tomorrow, the majority of the U.S. population would starve to death in a few months, for example. Smoking tobacco provides no such widespread or public benefits.


Meanwhile, Moorhead, Minnesota just passed an anti-smoking law: Moorhead's ordinance outlaws smoking in "any enclosed indoor facility, business or establishment used by the general public, or used as a place of work." (http://www.startribune.com/stories/462/4842101.html)
