"Someone with a gorgeous sense of humor recently tagged a deserted commercial building fronting the sidewalk at 27th and Bloomington where drug dealers regularly congregate. The large graffito read "Crack 4 Sale". I'm told that buyers were fairly reluctant to pull up in front of it and that retail activity languished as a result. It has since been painted over, and I can't help smiling when I think of who must have done it, and why." P. Weir, June, '04
I know it's not the done thing to quote oneself in polite company, but to the half-dozen or so of you who reacted offline to the post above, I'm sorry to have to report that it was the City and not our Bloomington entrepreneurs who painted over the "Crack 4 Sale" sign. Apparently, President Fox of Mexico was scheduled to travel down Bloomington on his way to visit the Mercado Centrale, and the City didn't want to draw his attention to their retail activities. Reminds me of the time in my Army career at Fort Carson when President Kennedy was scheduled to drive past our barracks on a whirlwind presidential inspection. The first sergeant had some extra green paint which he ordered us to apply to a small area outside the orderly room and to outline it with white-washed rocks. One can only imagine Kennedy's reaction had he noticed this army grass. (He didn't.)
