My fianc and I took our first ride on the Hiawatha Line this afternoon. We walked over to the 38th Street Station and hopped a train bound for downtown. The crowds were large and the lines were long. We saw five northbound trains go by before we could get on ourselves. The line of folks waiting to get back on the southbound trains at the Warehouse stop went around the block.

Everybody seemed to be in a good mood. We enjoyed the great weather and the free rides.

There were musicians and booths at all the stations we passed. There was a big group of Northstar Commuter Line supporters at the Government Plaza station congratulating us on our new LRT line (and boosting their line). I also saw folks registering people to vote.

The trains are great on the inside (there are bike racks in all the cars and I didn't see any signs restricting bikes on the trains during certain hours - as is the case in D.C. on the Metro and in San Francisco on the BART). My only criticism is that the noise that precedes the closing of the doors as the train is getting ready to leave the station is a bit too piercing. I'm used to a two-tone chime and a soothing voice asking me to stand clear of the doors. This is more like my alarm clock. Hopefully, we can get a more Minnesota Nice chime for the doors here.

Can't wait for the Airport/MOA leg of the line to open up later this year!
