I agree with the observations of Barbara and Paul about the Hiawatha
Line. I would like to see its success judged by how much it adds to the
quality of life in Minneapolis. I have a neighbor who was grumbling about
having to drive down to the Parkway to get over to the strip mall near
Minnehaha Park. And a few of the folks in the lines at the station were a
little overwhelmed by the length of the lines, as was my five year old. But
all in all, I will say that our quality of life was significantly enhanced
today. It is truly remarkable to see how much rich, vibrant neighborliness
there is in the part of town.
Measuring the success of the Hiawatha line by some kind of number
associated with car commute time or cost to downtown is a very narrow and
ultimately not very useful point of view. My friends in Amsterdam and
Stolkholm shake their heads bemusedly and ask very sincerely, "Why would
you want to measure commute time by car to the center of the city from the
subburbs?" Listening to music with my kids near the train station today,
smiling at friends happening by, I was at a loss to come up with an answer
for that.
