Virtually all libraries, except the "regional" libraries--Walker, Washburn, North, and East Lake were given pitiful hours, regardless of usage. It was a dumb way to do it.

After watching the Ways and Means Committee meeting 7/01/04 of the City Council, it seems that some Council members feel that the Uptown area needs and deserves a grand old library.
The comment was made... it is the third busiest library and they want a library their children can be proud of.

I would like to show some figures that were relevant a year ago when decisions were
made about the library closures.

Walker was built in 1981, it is second in adult circulation, fourth in juvenile
circulation, third in overall 8th in library usage .....they are open 40 hours with
Saturday.

Nokomis Library was built in 1962, it is fourth in adult circulation, second in
juvenile, fourth in overall circulation and seventh in library usage .....Nokomis
was give 24 hours without Saturday. Due to public concern, NRP gave Nokomis money
for the summer reading program so they have 17 Saturdays that will end in October.

I understand that council members want to be proud of their library, we want a library that is open for our children so we can be proud of our children...the building means nothing but at least keep the doors open. Being cut to 24 hours is unthinkable. The problem with Nokomis is we are just middle class working people. We do not have a greenway, there's no neon on our buildings, the night life doesn't happen here, no one comes to be seen so therefore this area is unimportant. We pay taxes that go elsewhere...even our NRP dollars are being taken to pay for police to work elsewhere at overtime pay.

I don't believe that Uptown's needs are greater than ours. I don't believe the
children are more important than ours. The Walker was not slated to be rebuilt and if
there is any money available, open the doors of the libraries that have been cut to
the core and stop this preferential selecting.
