I've used both 28th and 28th streets (26th more often) instead of dealing with Lake, and they can be a real timesaver. I recently used 28th to travel from Lyndale to Hiawatha and didn't have to stop once, since all the traffic lights seemed to be better synchronized than on Lake. Probably one of the bigger problems with Lake is that the timing of the traffic signals make no sense at all. I think traffic could be much improved if they were.
I agree with this. The lights are much better on 26th and 28th.
I think that a three-lane Lake Street with continuous left-turn lanes, combined with better-timed signals, is more than adequate. Perhaps the city could use signs to direct through traffic to 26th and 28th streets to better divert traffic from Lake and make it more pedestrian friendly.
I think both of these ideas should be tried before we start eliminating parking. I was over in Mac-Groveland this afternoon so I performed an experiment. Starting from the river at 5:44pm, it took me just over 11 minutes to drive on Lake all the way to Lyndale. It took me five mintes to drive from Lyndale to Hennepin. Seems like at this time the real bottleneck is in Uptown, which doesn't surprise me at all. Note that I am _not_ advocating for widening the streets in Uptown! We should keep Lake as pedestrian-friendly as possible all the way through. It's hard enough to cross already without more lanes.
Perhaps I just get lucky driving at the times I do. I'm usually on about 7 in the morning and 5:30 at night. If it's about timing, then rush hour must be quite short or people start work much later and leave much earlier than I do. :-/
