Fred Markus wrote, "This year, the closing dates for open registration are on 
Tuesday, August 18 prior to the primary election on Tuesday, September 14 and again on 
Tuesday, October 12 prior to the general election on Tuesday, November 2. Once these 
deadlines come into play, no one can register to vote until the very election day 
involved."

        [BRM] Actually, there is a way to register during the 20-day period before the 
election -- if you are voting by absentee ballot. You can vote by absentee ballot if 
you can't vote in person on election day because you are away from home, ill or 
disabled, an election judge serving in another precinct, or unable to go to the 
polling place due to a religious holiday or beliefs. If you are eligible to vote by 
absentee ballot but haven't registered yet, then you can register at the county 
auditor's office up to one day before the election. See Minn. Stat. � 203B.04, subd. 4.
